Understanding Permit Status

SJPermits.org enables you to find information about permits, properties and zoning status for all permits.

Before you can check a permit status, you need to locate the property file in SJPermits. Use the Property Information search button to get started. You may search by:

Address - Enter the building number and street name only; do not enter direction (N, S, E, W) or type of road (Ave., Rd., St., etc.).
Assessor's Parcel Number - No spaces or dashes.
Permit or Project Reference Number:
- For Permit or Folder Number, include the full year without dashes, such as 2020103030
- For Project Reference Number, include dashes such as TR20-001.
Tract Number – Use numbers only, such as 10010.

HOW TO CHECK PERMIT STATUS

Use the search function to locate the permit you wish to view. You can see basic information of the permit or folder number, reference file number, address, property folder type, work type, and expiration date.

Anyone can log in and see the “Status” of a permit at a particular address, as shown in the table below.

Only applicants for a project can see the “Application Status” (described after the table) that indicates the status of an application that is underway.

Examples of Status – In the Status column, you'll see descriptions that may vary based on that may vary based on the type of permit. The table below provides examples of how the status might read for a permit being issued by Building, Fire, Planning, or Public Works, and provides definitions for what the Status means.

DIVISION	STATUS	DEFINITION
Building	Intake	The application process has started but submittal is not complete. For online permits, you may use the ‘Continue to Submit Application’ option.
	Technical Review	This permit is in progress and under review.
	Under Inspection	Permit has been issued and inspections either need to be scheduled or are in progress.
	Finaled	Construction is completed and a final inspection was conducted and the project is approved, if relevant, for occupancy.
Fire	Intake	Application is under submittal conformance review.
	Under Review	Permit is in progress and under review.
	Review Complete – Fees Due	Fees must be paid before approved plans and permit can be issued.
	Under Inspection	Permitted construction work requires fire inspections.
	Closed	Fire permit has had final sign-off by fire inspector.
Planning	New	The application has been submitted.
	Under Review	The project is currently under review.
	Cancelled	The City has cancelled the application.
	Rejected	The City has rejected the application.
	Complete	The application request is completed.
	Approved	The application has been reviewed by Planning and the permit is approved.
	Denied	The application has been reviewed by Planning and the permit is denied.
	Withdrawn	The applicant has withdrawn the application.
Public Works	Under Review	This permit is in progress and under review.
	Pending Approval	Non-Maps: Technical review is complete and staff are waiting for final items from the applicant. Maps: Technical Review is complete and map is being routed or waiting for signatures. Vacations: Vacation technical review is complete. Preparing documentation for City Council for approval.
	Approved	Utilities: Waiting for utility engineer to approve and issue for construction Non-utility excluding maps: Permit approved for construction Maps: Map ready to be recorded at County Vacations: Approved by City Council, waiting to be recorded at County.
	Issued	Permit issued for construction
	Cancelled	Permit has been cancelled by City or applicant
	Withdrawn	Application withdrawn by applicant request

Application Status – The Application Status field is only found on the “My Services” page for signed-in applicants. The status options are:

In-Progress: Your application has not yet been submitted or paid for.
Submitted: Your initial application has been submitted to the City.
Cancelled: You have opted to cancel your application prior to submission and payment.
